Hamilton Olympic cemented their 1st place on the NPL ladder on Sunday afternoon at Darling Street oval with an emphatic 2-0 victory over Broadmeadow Magic.

In perfect weather conditions and before a huge crowd at Darling St Oval, Olympic began the onslaught in the 2’ with a flick on by Kane Goodchild which found unmarked Andrew Swan, who shot wide of the mark.

By the 12’ sustained pressure by the home side resulted in a free kick just outside the Magic area. Simon Mooney lined up his shot, and while the Magic defence was napping, he opened the account for Olympic 1-0.

In the 24’ the same player from another free kick saw his shot curl just above the crossbar.

The rest of the half continued with Olympic comfortably controlling the midfield and Magic unable to create any clear cut chances for an equaliser.

The second half began with Magic trying to get around the Olympic defence from the flanks but despite numerous crosses, Danny Ireland’s goal was un-penetrable.

As Magic chased the game for the equaliser, Olympic looked very dangerous on the break. During one of these counter attacks, a cross from the left found Andrew Swan inside the area, who did not hesitate in sending the ball at the back of the net and the Olympic supporters in the seventh heaven!

Magic continued to attack with Kale Bradbury firing into the arms of Danny Ireland and Josh Cox forcing the Olympic goalie to curl it over for a corner.

Olympic continued to counter attack with the best opportunity falling to Andrew Swan, seconds before the final whistle, who blasted over the top!

Despite the pressure from Magic, Olympic were able to hold on the 2-0 score line until the final whistle.

Next round Hamilton Olympic host Adamstown Rosebuds at Darling Street Oval at 2.30.

Hamilton Olympic defeated Maitland at Cook Square Park in the last game in Round 1 of the 2015 NPL Competition.

Within a minute from kick off the Olympic defence was caught napping, forcing goalkeeper Danny Ireland to bring down Joel Woods inside the penalty area! The ensuing penalty was converted into a goal by Blake Thompson, putting Olympic on the back foot from the beginning of the match.

In the next 10 minutes Olympic struggled to settle on a very bumpy surface at Cook Square Park, enabling Maitland to dominate possession and play the game in our third of the field.

As the game wore on, Olympic adapted to the conditions and slowly took over possession and began attacking from the flanks.

In the 37th minute Matt Thompson forced an excellent save from Danny Ireland but a minute later Denis Fajkovic brought down Kane Goodchild inside the penalty box, and from the ensuing penalty, the Olympic forward had no difficulty in sending the Maitland goalkeeper the wrong way.

In the last 10 minutes of the first half Olympic put Maitland under considerable pressure with darting runs from the flanks.

The teams went into half time locked at 1-1.

In the second half Olympic continued to pressure the Maitland goal in search for the second goal while the desperation by the home side to avoid defeat resulted in a small number of scuffles between players from both teams.

In the 70th minute a poor clearance from Maitland goalkeeper Benn Kelly resulted in Simon Mooney intercepting the ball and passing it to Rhys Cooper who fired it over the cross bar!

Seven minutes later Kane Goodchild flicked on a header inside the area to Simon Mooney who didn’t hesitate in burring the ball into the Maitland net and putting Olympic 2-1 up.

Moments later a scramble inside the Maitland penalty box almost resulted in a third goal but the home side were able to clear the ball.

The closing minutes of the game saw Mason Campbell limp off the field and give his place to Cody Lucas while Matt Harper fired a shot into the hands of the Maitland goalkeeper instead of a gaping goal.

It wasn’t pretty but Olympic won the 3 points which leaves it in first place on 21 points, ahead of Weston on 19 and Edgeworth on 18.

Olympic U22s defeated Maitland 2-0 and U19s 3-1.

Next Sunday, Olympic host Broadmeadow Magic at 2.30 at Darling Street Oval.

Hamilton Olympic downed Charlestown City 4-2 on a wet Darling St Oval to climb to the top of the NPL table.

Proceedings began in the 10th minute when Simon Mooney, with only the City keeper to beat, fired a shot into the hands of Kyle Predebon.

Four minutes later, a well taken shot by midfield ace Jacob Bailey opened the score for the home side.

Olympic continued to test the City goal time after time and against the run of play, a shot by Jared Ross deflected off an Olympic defender to end up at the back of Danny Ireland’s goal 1-1!

Olympic continued the pressure and a lovely through ball by Mathew Swan found Simon Mooney who had no problem putting the ball in the back of the net for a 2-1 lead.

Simon Mooney then returned the favour with a pin point cross to the head of Mathew Swan who added a third for Olympic. The teams went into half time with Olympic leading 3-1.

Olympic continued the second half from where they left off the first. In the 55th minute Jacob Bailey was at the end of a simple tap-in to make the score 4-1.

In the 77’ minute Ben Hughes executed a free kick for City which struck Danny Ireland’s crossbar and as the ball re-bounded, Scott Smith tapped it in to reduce the score to 4-2.

Charlestown City was reduced to 10 men when Cameron Sullini brought down Pat Brown, who was on his way with only the keeper to beat. Despite a late fight back by City, the score remained 4-2.

Overall an entertaining game of football in wet conditions and a result which brings Hamilton Olympic in 1st spot of the NPL ladder.

Hamilton Olympic meet Maitland in Round 9 of the NPL competition on 7th June at Cook Square Park at 2.30 pm.

Hamilton Olympic reached the top of the ladder after an emphatic win at Weston Workers this afternoon by 3-1.

Olympic hit the lead after 20 minutes of play through Jacob Bailey but just as they threatened to make it 2-0, Weston Workers managed to equalise just before the break.

Early in the second half Olympic won a penalty but Kane Goodchild was unable to convert the spot kick.

Olympic then piled on the pressure to score two wonderful headers through Kane Goodchild. Despite sustained pressure from Weston towards the later part of the game, Olympic were able to hold on to the score comfortably.

The win is the second away victory of the season and brings the club 1st spot on the table with 15 points.

Weston Workers FC stalwart Robbie Turnbull is set to play his 200th First Grade fixture in Northern NSW’s top flight in front of a home crowd on Sunday against Hamilton Olympic FC in Round 7 of the PS4 NPL.

Turnbull commenced his senior career with Weston in 2004 at 18 years of age after playing junior football with Adamstown Rosebud and became a regular First Grade starter in 2005.

Turnbull is ranked fifth on Weston’s all-time longest serving list, only behind Roy Johnson, Tommy Snedden, late uncle John Thomas Turnbull, and teammate Nathan Morris who played his own 200th match just last year.

Having played a major part in the club both on and off the field, Turnbull will be recognised for his achievements during a pre-match presentation conducted by Life Member John Munro.

“Robbie is enthusiastic, he is passionate and he gives 100 percent whether it be at training or in games,’ Coach Trevor Morris said, ‘He has it all and he really loves the game.”

Reflecting on his time with the club, Turnbull believes the achievement is reflective of Weston’s ethos.

“It’s a milestone for me, but it says a lot about the club and what they’re about, to be able to keep two people in the same age still playing in first grade together (himself and Nathan Morris), it shows a lot about where the club has come from in the past ten to twelve years that we have been there,” he said.

“You don’t try and make too much of it because it’s just another game of football, I have a lot of history with the club, I’ve been with them a long time, there is a lot of family history there and friends that have come through the club,” Turnbull said.

“My Uncle John has 228, and I guess that’s one of the goals to try and top him off,” laughed Turnbull, “There’s only five blokes who have done it, so to have myself and my uncle on the list, it’s pretty special.”

Regarding the opposition, Turnbull is looking forward to taking on a fellow top ranked PS4 NPL squad in his 200th match, and when asked if he is expecting a victory against Olympic stated “Never a doubt in my mind!” continuing, “We’ve started well, Trevor has brought a lot of confidence and self-belief to the squad, I think it will be a tight game between two teams that I expect at the end of the year to be at the top of the table,” Turnbull concluded.

Northern NSW Football would like to congratulate Turnbull on his achievements and wish him the best towards his goal of 228 fixtures to match his uncle.

HAMILTON coach Michael Bolch warned the best was yet to come from his squad after they outmuscled the in-form Newcastle Jets Youth for a 2-1 win in round six of the Northern NSW National Premier League on Sunday.

A fourth-minute header from Kane Goodchild and an 83rd-minute run and strike from Andrew Swan gave Olympic a deserved win over a slick Jets outfit at Darling Street Oval.

The Jets, who boasted A-League players Radovan Pavicevic, Nick Cowburn and Michael Kantarovski, had won their past three games but were on the back foot when goalkeeper Jesse Cook was caught in no-man’s land off a long-range free kick from Mason Campbell to Goodchild, who lobbed his header over the gloveman.

The Jets could not mount sustained pressure as Olympic worked overtime in midfield to shut down the visitors.

However, they found a way through in the 50th minute when Michael Kantarovski scored with a near-post header from a corner after Reece Papas had a shot parried wide.

The contest, though, was summed up by the winning goal.

Jason Korotkich showed desperation to win the ball for Hamilton in midfield before Reece Cooper quickly played in Swan, who cut inside his man to shoot into the bottom-right corner.

The work of Korotkich was exactly what Bolch was looking for against the Jets.

“We did a lot of work on trying to shut down their passing channels,” Bolch said.

“We had to do a lot of chasing, but you have to do that against them.

“You know you are going to be working hard off the ball to shut them down, because they are good and fit.

“That’s what I’m happy with. No one went missing today. There were no standouts, but everyone did their job.”

Bolch has a fitter and more mobile line-up this season and believes they will continue to improve as they gel.

“We’ve instilled that hard work into them that was missing a bit last year,” he said.

“There’s no slackers there, they were all working hard, but I think we are three or four weeks away from being where we want to be.

“We have three or four new players and everyone is starting to know their roles.”

Jets coach Peter McGuinness said poor decision-making from his side created a high number of turnovers and a game which was “scrappier than what we wanted”.

“We did enough to win the game, but I just thought we could have done better with the ball, which they need to be if they want to be footballers,” McGuinness said.

“They need to control the game with the ball, and that’s what we’re trying to achieve.”

Elsewhere, Kale Bradbery scored four goals as Broadmeadow came from 1-0 down at half-time to rout South Cardiff 4-1 at Magic Park.

At Lisle Carr Oval, a Weston side missing James Monie, Troy Hearfield and Jason Cowburn defeated Charlestown 3-1 thanks to goals from Garry McDermott, Nathan Morris and Jake Millsteed.

Rene Ferguson scored for Charlestown.

Edgeworth beat Lambton Jaffas 2-1 at Jack McLaughlan Oval despite going down to 10 men in the 32nd minute.

Bren Hammel was given a straight red card for a two-footed challenge at 0-0.

A Jobe Wheelhouse strike put Lambton ahead in the 42nd minute before Josh Evans equalised with a header two minutes later. Keanu Moore scored the winner for the Eagles in the 66th.

On Saturday, Guy Bates scored one goal and set up two others as Rosebud won their first game of the season, beating last-placed Maitland 3-1 at Adamstown Oval.

Bates scored with a free kick in the 28th minute, then turned provider, whipping in a cross for Nic Bale to head home in the 39th minute.

Joel Wood produced a header to get the visitors back in the game before Scottish defender Garry Kenneth got a touch to a Bates free kick to seal the win in the 89th minute.

Hamilton Olympic took on South Cardiff in the 4th round of the Senior NPL competition at Ulinga Oval and easily overran their opponents by 5-2.

Simon Mooney bagged two goals, while Kane Goodhchild and Pat Brown scored one a piece. South Cardiff’s misery was completed with an own goal.

This places Olympic in 3rd position, 3 points behind league leaders Broadmeadow Magic and with a game in hand.

Olympic’s next match is at Darling Street Oval on Sunday against the Newcastle Jets Youth. Kick off is at 1.30 while the Under 22s begin at 11.45 and Under 19s at 10.00.

Hamilton Olympic Football Club is a semi-professional association football club based in Hamilton a suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales.

The club competes in the National Premier Leagues Northern NSW, the second tier of football in Australia.

The club was established by Greek immigrants in the New South Wales city of Newcastle in 1976. It is one of the most successful football clubs in Newcastle.
