U16s Newcastle Jets edge out Bankstown Utd 1-0

U16s Newcastle Jets made it two wins from two outings against Bankstown United on Sunday at LMRFF in their first home game of the season. It wasn’t pretty but it was a win!

Playing in warm and humid conditions the Jets began well maintaining possession, keeping the opposition away from their goal and probing the Bankstown goal with through balls and set pieces. Despite enjoying more possession, they lacked composure and were rushing their game instead of the free-flowing passing we are used to seeing. Just before half-time they opened the score with a header from a well taken corner kick.

The Jets continued to dominate possession in the second half but again could not break down their opponent who was reduced to long range shots. The game finished 1-0 to the Jets who recorded their second victory from as many matches. While the frustration at the Jets not being able to play their free-flowing passing game is understandable some credit must also go to the players of Bankstown United who fought all game to ensure this didn’t happen.

Newcastle Jets welcome Bankstown United at LMRFF in Round 2 of the competition

Newcastle Jets welcome Bankstown United at the LMRFF in Round 2 of the FNSW Boys’ Youth League 2, on Sunday 27th February 2022.

With three victories and two losses from last week’s Round 1 fixtures at Rydalmere Lions in Sydney, the Jets are keen to put on a great show in their first home game of the season. Their opponents Bankstown United failed to win a single game in all five age groups in their Round 1 clash with Bonnyrigg White Eagles – U18s 5-0 win to Bonnyrigg, U16s 1-0 win to Bonnyrigg, U15s 0-0 draw, U14s 2-2 draw, U13s 4-2 win to Bonnyrigg!

With the Jets wanting to impress by playing on home soil for the first time this year and Bankstown needing to wash their hands from their Round 1 results, the clash between the two clubs promises to be an interesting one.

U16s Newcastle Jets too strong for Rydalmere Lions

03

Playing in Round 1 of the FNSW Boys’ League 2 competition for the 2022 season, U16s Newcastle Jets proved too strong for their counter-parts from Rydalmere Lions.

In cool conditions at Rydalmere Park Main, both teams began the match at a very quick pace, giving spectators the impression they would be in for a good exhibition of football. The Newcastle Jets scored two goals early on and were able to dictate the tempo of the match in the first part of the half.

As the game wore on, possession evened out but with the Sydney team rarely threatening the Jets goal.

With the commencement of the second half, the Newcastle team enjoyed the lion’s share of possession, leaving the Sydney siders to merely chasing shadows! Despite the huge amount of possession, the third goal didn’t come but Rydalmere were kept at bay, rarely threatening the Newcastle goal.

In the later stages of the game, Newcastle Jets won a free kick on the edge of the box which they converted in the third goal which ensured the first win of the season. In the remaining time, the Jets kept possession, eliminating the possibility of any threat of a come-back by the local team.

Not only was this a great result for the Newcastle team but a great performance too, especially in the second half. Considering the squad boasted seven players making their debut in a formal game with Jets colours, both players and coaching staff should be commended.

ROUND 1 U16s Results:

Bankstown United  vs  Bonnyrigg White Eagle           0-1

Rydalmere Lions vs Newcastle Jets                             0-3
