Newcastle Olympic visited Magic Park and was unable to come away with any points, losing 2-1 in both Reserve and First Grade!
Newcastle Olympic Reserve Grade went into this match knowing that 3 points was of paramount importance if they were to sustain pressure on the other two teams fighting for Premiership honours, Valentine FC and Cooks Hill. In slippery and cold conditions they began the match well with Jess Fitzgerald catching a defender in possession of the ball and being able to lob the keeper to open the score line 1-0.
Just before half time Broadmeadow Magic were able to equalise after Olympic failed to mark adequately from a corner kick! This was uncharacteristic of the team but given the lack of competitive matches due to programming and wet weather, hardly surprising!
In the second half a lucky bounce of the ball from a cross from the right set up a Broadmeadow forward perfectly who had no problem increasing the score-line to 2-1! Olympic chased the game until the very end but to no avail.
They appeared to lack the spark and intensity we are accustomed to seeing. Indeed, this match resembled a trial game at the start of the season than a competition match. This is what happens due to a prolonged period of competitive games due to scheduling and wet weather.
First Grade began the match with much promise with Jye Rodway scoring in the opening minute for the visitors. Ben Diamond levelled the score in the 32nd and J. Cresnar put Magic in front 2-1 by the 42nd minute.
Despite all efforts, this scoreline remained until the end. Olympic were defeated but they were competitive until the final whistle.
