The U20s Newcastle Jets reclaimed a 9 point lead at the top of the FNSW League Two Men’s table after defeating Hurstville FC 4-2 on Sunday night! The goal feast began as early as the 3rd minute through a well taken volley after a sustained Newcastle attack. Hurstville replied three minutes later through a penalty caused by an accidental hand ball by a Newcastle defender.
The Sydney team presented as a tall and solid side playing very compact and with only one lone striker up front. The Jets were given little space to play and they attempted to break through using their flanks and long balls at the feet of running forward players.
During a Hurstville attack, an attempt to clear the ball by a Newcastle defender resulted in the ball being deflected off the face of a Sydney player and ending up at the back of the Jets goal! This was achieved 3 minutes before half time but in exactly the 45th minute a pin-point cross from the right to a Newcastle forward and an equally great first touch and shot resulted in both teams going into the half time break at 2-2.
In the 2nd half the Jets were able to get the upper hand in the 53rd minute when the ref felt a Newcastle player was impeded and awarded a penalty. This was converted and with the score at 3-2, the local team had to come out of their shell to salvage any points from a game which the Jets enjoyed most of the possession.
During a Newcastle counter-attack, a great cross from the right was couple by a great shot by an incoming forward who had no trouble making the score 4-2 in the 71st minute. The Jets continued to dominate possession and threatened with more goal scoring opportunities until the final whistle.
This win gives the Newcastle team a 9 point lead at the top of the U20s table and coupled with Youth’s 6-1 victory over the same opponent, a comfortable lead in the Club Championship of the FNSW League Two Men’s table.
