U20s Newcastle Jets defeated Prospect FC on Sunday night at the LMRFF to go 9 point clear on top of the FNSW League Two Men’s table! After both teams suffered their first defeat of the season the previous week at the hands of Sydney University and Camden Tigers respectively, this was the clash between 1st versus 2nd on the ladder. The match certainly lived up to the billing as a clash between two equally balanced teams that fought tooth and nail throughout the 90 minutes to gain the advantage.

The Newcastle team moved the ball quicker and was technically superior but the Sydney team was physically strong and kept the Jets at bay. The Jets concentrated their play through the flanks and through constant movement of the ball. The first goal game midway through the  1st half with a well worked attack from the right and a whipped cross which found the Sydney defense stretched for an easy tap in.

Newcastle controlled play well and although neither team was able to create many clear cut goal scoring opportunities, they looked more confident on the ball and controlled possession. In the final minute of the 1st half a poorly headed ball and a lucky bounce resulted in a Prospect forward finding time and space to fire a shot which the Newcastle keeper was unable to save. Both teams went into the half time break locked at 1-1.

The 2nd half was as tight as the 1st half with Newcastle controlling possession and Prospect resisting and trying to catch their opponents on the break. In the final 15 minutes of the game the stalemate was broken when a Newcastle winger was able to beat the Prospect left back and whipped up a well weighted cross which found a Jets forward unmarked on the far post who didn’t have any problem striking the ball for a 2-1 score-line!

The remainder of the match was spent with intelligent possession football by Newcastle and backs -to-the-wall attacking by the Sydney siders. Despite their efforts the Jets team was able to hold on to a hard-fought win and remain 9 points clear at the top of the U20s table.
