Shock Olympic defeat 0-2 at the hands of Maitland Magpies

imagesTMYDX5TN

Hamilton Olympic lost their first home game on the last round of the season against a Maitland team which secured it’s place in next year’s NPL 24 hours earlier!

In perfect conditions Olympic began the match with a statistic which would send fear in any opposing defence – 17 goals scored in the last three matches played!
Maitland’s tactics to overcome this statistic was to play deep and with everyone behind the ball but the centre forward.

As a result, Olympic had to wait almost 10 minutes for their first sniff at goal with Simon Mooney firing a free kick from outside the box which didn’t trouble Ben Kelly.

Maitland returned the compliment with an opportunity of their own in the 21st minute with a failed diving header by Joel Wood.

On the half hour mark Maitland’s confidence grew and they began committing numbers in the middle third of the field swamping our midfield and denying our attack of service.

Despite this, a good through ball by Kane Goodchild to Matthew Swan on the left, enabled the later to get a shot on target from a narrow angle which didn’t trouble Ben Kelly.

A few moments later, Kane Goodchild receives the ball in midfield, makes a darting diagonal run, fires a shot on target but Ben Kelly is there again!

A replica run a minute later by the same player sees his shot well over the bar.

Just before half time a good cross from Matthew Swan from the left enables Kane Goodchild to fire-in a header which looked to have crossed the goal line, but which the referee claimed, it did not!

Half time finds both teams locked at 0-0 with Maitland playing a disciplined game defending in numbers and denying Olympic time on the ball and space in which to attack. The only way Olympic look like breaking the deadlock is through a flash of individual brilliance from one of our players.

Olympic create the first goal scoring opportunity of the second half when Kane Goodchild fires over the bar while 10 minutes later Danny Ireland is forced to bend a ball around the post.

On the hour mark a well taken free kick by Maitland finds Harrison Maguire on the edge of the far post, who brings it under control and who has no difficulty finding the back of the net.

Trailing 0-1 and with Maitland’s confidence growing, Olympic pushed forward but nothing seemed to be coming off.

Reece Cooper weaved his way into the box, forced a great save out of Ben Kelly, Pat Brown heads the rebound into the Maitland net but the linesman claims he was offside and the goal does not count!

Moments later, Reece Cooper turns his defender inside out and fires a shot on target, only to see Ben Kelly bend it around the post.

As Olympic commit players forward, one counter attack by the Magpies and a perfectly weighted cross to the head of Joel Wood and 0-2 is on the scoreboard!
This is our first home loss and the 2nd loss of the season. As a result we slip into 3rd position on the ladder and in next week’s semi-final we take on Lambton Jaffas.

NPL Round 18 Preview: Hamilton Olympic – Maitland

o-v-w-2nd-aug-4-798x532

It is the final round of one of the closest NPL seasons on record. Three of the top 4 places are decided with Broadmeadow or Weston to make up the fourth spot.

On Saturday Lambton host South Cardiff. Lambton can go top of the table with a win whilst South Cardiff need to produce the game of their lives to stay up. Winning the game is the Gunners first priority but by a large margin is also needed to stay up. Lambton won 5 nil earlier this season when they last played each other.

Adamstown host Jets Youth in a game where neither side can go up or down. The Rosebuds are 8 points clear of the Jets who are 4 points ahead of Charlestown. Normally when there is no pressure on teams to perform it produces a good open game so maybe a few goals will be scored. The last time they met Adamstown won 2-1.

Three games on Sunday sees Broadmeadow at home to Charlestown City. The Magic just needs to win to secure a top 4 birth, whilst Charlestown City can start planning their end of season trip. The last time these two sides met there was a few heated exchanges in a 1 nil win to the Blues.

Edgeworth can wrap up the minor premiership with a win at home when they host Weston who need a big win to play finals football. The Bears got the points last time these two met but that was in their backyard. The Eagles have been solid all season at home and should secure the minor premiership with a win on Sunday.

The final game of Round 18 sees another contender for the minor premiership in Hamilton Olympic at home to Maitland. All Olympic can do is win and hope Lambton and Edgeworth draw or lose. Maitland just need a point to be safe but they will already know their fate by Saturday afternoon with the Jaffas, Gunners game on Saturday. Olympic won 2-1 the last time when these two clubs met in Round 9.

Hamilton Olympic steam roll Charlestown City 5-1

images

Olympic attack: 17 goals in 3 games…!!!

Hamilton Olympic continued their blitz in front of goal, scoring another 5 in round 17 of the NPL, giving no chance to Charlestown City from salvaging any points at Lisle Carr Oval.

On a warm and sunny afternoon, Olympic opened proceedings with their captain Mason Campbell after a scramble in front of the Charlestown goal.
Charlestown are playing open offensive football and every time Olympic break they look very menacing.

Just before the 40 minute mark, Simon Mooney makes a darting run on the right and despite narrowing his angle the closer he got to goal, he had no problem tucking it into the net, 2-0!

Just before half time, Charlestown had a golden opportunity to score, when they fired a shot from close range, and with Danny Ireland beaten, Reece Cooper clears off the line!

From the kick off in the 2nd half, Olympic have two narrow misses from the head of Kane Goodchild and the boot of Cody Lucas.

Ten minutes later, Kane Goodchild spreads the ball wide to Simon Mooney who sends in a perfectly weighted cross to Ben Koina, who in turn, brings it down and places it wide of the Charlestown keeper and into an empty net! With 3-0 up, Charlestown coming forward, Olympic looking very hungry during counter attacks and Kane Goodchild supreme in the air, you just had the feeling more goals would follow.

This is exactly what happened 10 minutes later when a well taken free kick by Simon Mooney from the right into a packed Charlestown box, found the head of Kane Goodchild who in turn had no problem making it 4-0!

Charlestown continue to go forward and Olympic continue to look very dangerous with every counter- attack. On one occasion when the home side made it inside the Olympic penalty area, a scramble ensured and the score was reduced to 4-1!

Seconds before the referee blew the final whistle Simon Mooney passed to Ben Koina who in turn crossed to Reece Cooper who was sprinting into the penalty box from the left and who connected with the ball to make the final score 5-1 for Olympic.

A vintaged Olympic display and an Olympic attack which has bagged 17 goals in three games!

HAMILTON OLYMPIC: Brown meets the challenge

images

OLYMPIC striker Pat Brown was told on Friday night that if he wanted to keep his starting spot he needed to be a consistent performer as Hamilton build towards the Northern NSW National Premier League finals.

The response on Sunday at Darling Street Oval was exactly what coach Michael Bolch was hoping for.

The speedster, who has been used mostly off the bench this season, scored a hat-trick as Olympic thumped Weston 5-1 to stay within reach of Edgeworth in the premiership race and leave the fourth-placed Bears facing a crunch game against Broadmeadow this weekend in the penultimate round.

Brown pounced on a failed clearance at the back in the sixth minute and put his left-foot shot past goalkeeper Tim Pratt.

Matt Swan produced a well placed left-foot strike to make it 2-0 after 16 minutes before Kane Goodchild scored off a long ball that caught Weston napping at the back in the 23rd.

Weston created chances late in the half, but Olympic went to the break 3-0 ahead.

Brown again took advantage of a turnover in Bears territory, taking a ball from Jacob Bailey in behind the defence before finishing with his left foot in the 65th minute.

His best moment, though, was still to come. In the 72nd minute, Brown made a long, overlapping run down the right flank on a Hamilton counter-attack before again finishing with his left boot.

Garry McDermott got one back for Weston in the 74th minute, but the result was beyond doubt.

Bolch was pleased with the effort of Brown, who has come into the starting side over the past three weeks after a reshuffle of Hamilton’s line-up.
‘‘When he’s on, he’s on, and he took his chances well today,’’ Bolch said.
‘‘We spoke to him on Friday night and said that if he wants to stay in the starting side he has to be consistent and do those little one per centers every week.
‘‘He’s taken that on board and done really well today.’’

Bolch said the performances of Brown and Ben Koina, who has also started in recent games, had helped Olympic recover from a four-game winless streak that ended last week with a 7-0 rout of the Jets Youth.

‘‘They’ve got that confidence back they didn’t have when we had those three or four bad games,’’ Bolch said.

‘‘The couple of changes that we’ve made, like Benny Koina and Pat Brown coming into the starting side, have really helped us in the front third.

‘‘Having said that, Matt and Andrew Swan are doing really well. We get that go forward out of right and left fullback with them and Ben gives a lot of energy in the middle of the park.’’

The Bears are now just three points clear of Broadmeadow, who have a better goal difference and travel to Weston on Sunday with the chance to take over in fourth.

Weston coach Trevor Morris was disappointed with his side’s display at the back.
‘‘We pride ourselves on our defence, and it just wasn’t there,’’ Morris said. ‘‘The first 15 minutes and we’re 3-0 down. They are a good team, Hamilton, but those goals were absolute gifts.

‘‘Even though we were poor, we had chances to get back into the game, but their commitment and desire was better than ours.’’

Peter Haynes and Kale Bradbery scored braces as Broadmeadow defeated the Jets Youth 5-2 at Magic Park.

The Jets scored early through Braedyn Crowley, but goals from Bradbery and Dino Fajkovic put Magic ahead 2-1 at half-time.

Ben Hay equalised for the Jets halfway through the second term before Magic piled on three goals in the last 15 minutes.

One of Haynes’ goals was a 60-metre strike which caught Jesse Cook off his line.
At Lisle Carr Oval, Joel Wood equalised for Maitland with four minutes left as the Magpies and Charlestown stayed in the relegation mix.

Ben Hughes scored with a 25-metre free kick about the 75-minute mark for Charlestown, who moved to 13 points, four ahead of South Cardiff and one clear of Maitland.

The Blues play a catch-up match with the Jets Youth on Wednesday night.
At Adamstown Oval, John Majurovski and Alex Palozzi scored two goals each as Lambton Jaffas thumped Rosebud 6-0 to end the hosts’ slim finals hopes.

Riley McNaughton scored with a long-range strike and Jobe Wheelhouse produced a clever finish to also get on the scoresheet.

On Friday night, Dylan Holz scored in the 85th minute and Bren Hammel curled in a free kick in the 88th as leaders Edgeworth beat South Cardiff 2-0 at Jack McLaughlan Oval.

● Merewether clinched the Herald Women’s Premier League minor premiership with a 2-0 win over Valentine on Sunday as second-placed Adamstown were shock 3-1 losers to lowly Wallsend.

Thornton kept their top-four hopes alive with 2-0 win over Mid North Coast, and South Wallsend beat Warners Bay 2-0.

Hamilton Olympic crush Weston Workers 5-1

images

Pat Brown hat-trick hero

Hamilton Olympic continued their goal spree in Round 16 of the NPL when they crushed Weston Workers 5-1 at Darling St Oval.

On a warm but windy afternoon, Olympic opened their account within the first five minutes through Pat Brown who intercepted a poor clearance by the Weston goalie, Tim Pratt.

By the 15th minute of play the score was 2-0 care of a solo run by Matthew Swan across the face of the goal.

The contest was over by the 23rd minute when Kane Goodchild received a long ball from Mason Campbell, he rounded Tim Pratt and fired into an empty net to make it 3-0.

Olympic dominated the game for the rest of the half but did not score any more goals.

In the second half Olympic cruised along until Pat Brown received the ball from a flick on and volleyed it past a hapless Tim Pratt for a 4-0 margin.

Pat Brown made it a hat trick when he collected the ball from a flick-on by Kane Goodchild, ran across the face of the Weston goal before unleashing a shot that ended in the back of the net.

No sooner had the celebrations subsided, Weston were able to reply through Gary McDermott, to put some respectability to the scoring.

After this result Olympic maintain 2nd spot on with only two games left.
