U18s Newcastle Jets take on Hills United in Round 1 of the 2023 Youth League One competition of Football NSW.

01-8 (2)

The end of last season culminated with Newcastle Jets winning the premiership at the expense of Hills United and collecting the Grand Final at the expense of the same team! The start of this season pitches the same teams against each other in a mouth-watering re-match at the LMRFF.

Hills United FC have invested in players during the off season and should be stronger than the fine side they were last season. Newcastle Jets have only had minor changes to their roster and should rise to the occasion for another great battle on the day.

Newcastle Jets Academy teams take on APIA Leichhardt FC in the last trial match before the start of the 2023 season next weekend. The matches will be played at Lambert Park in Sydney with the bureau forecasting hot conditions.

Young Socceroos squad named for AFC U-20 Asian Cup Uzbekistan 2023

Young-Socceroos_0

Young Socceroos’ Head Coach Trevor Morgan has selected a strong 23-player squad to represent Australia at the AFC U-20 Asian Cup Uzbekistan 2023™.

Comprising of nineteen locally based players, the Australians will assemble in Tashkent, Uzbekistan from February 20, where they have been drawn in Group B of four groups, alongside IR Iran, Qatar, and Vietnam during the tournament that runs 1 – 18 March, 2023.

The Subway Young Socceroos will need to reach the semi finals in Uzbekistan to qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup Indonesia 2023™, which would be Australia’s first appearance at this global event since 2013.

Speaking about the squad for the AFC U-20 Asian Cup Uzbekistan 2023™, Trevor Morgan said: “We have selected players who are emerging talents in the A-League Men’s competition and overseas leagues that need to be exposed to international tournament conditions, and the AFC U-20 Asian Cup provides up to six games inside 18 days against varied opponents.

“This squad of players have been inspired by the performances of the Subway Socceroos in Qatar, and those heading to Uzbekistan can’t wait to pull on the green and gold and represent not only themselves, their families and club, but the extended playing group on the international stage.

“Australia has not featured at the FIFA U-20 World Cup since 2013, and the valuable experience it provides players on their way to the Subway Olyroos and Subway Socceroos is immeasurable.

“We know the AFC U-20 Asian Cup presents a huge challenge, but these are environments the best players crave, and this tournament presents an opportunity to create history and qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, taking inspiration from the 2019 edition where Korea Republic appeared in the final,” concluded Morgan.

Football superstars like Diego Maradona, David Trezeguet, Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Paul Pogba and 2019 top goal scorer, Erling Haaland, all had their first exposure to international tournament football at previous FIFA U-20 World Cups, demonstrating the career defining opportunity that awaits the Subway Young Socceroos in Uzbekistan.

The FIFA U-20 World Cup Indonesia 2023™ is scheduled to run 20 May – 11 June 2023, which will feature 24 teams from six Confederations, including the semi-finalists from AFC U-20 Asian Cup Uzbekistan 2023™.

Due to this tournament being played outside a FIFA international window and following consultation with their respective clubs, a number of European-based players were unavailable for selection for the AFC U-20 Asian Cup Uzbekistan 2023™, however will be considered should Australia qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup Indonesia 2023™.

All Young Socceroos’ AFC U20 Asian Cup Uzbekistan 2023™ matches will be streamed live and free on 10 Play, with expert commentary by Teo Pellizzeri.

U18s Western Sydney Wanderers prove a great test for Newcastle Jets

U18s WSW vs Newcastle Jets

In their second last pre-season trial game, U18s Newcastle Jets had the opportunity to test their strengths against one of the best Academies in Australia on Saturday afternoon at Western Sydney Wanderers Football Park.

Despite losing the game 4-0, the Newcastle team was competitive for most of the game and got a taste of what it is like playing against opposition of the highest level. The difference between the two teams was that the Sydney team was a touch faster and more clinical in it’s finishing.

This match was a useful measuring tool to see how we compare to a probable top 3 side in U18s Youth League One this season. The standard is high but with a lot of hard work, within reach of the Newcastle team.

Next week Newcastle Jets test themselves against another top side in Apia Leichardt FC.

U18s Newcastle Jets take on Western Sydney Wanderers in a trial game

06-10

U18s Newcastle Jets travel to Sydney on Saturday to take on Western Sydney Wanderers in their second last trial game of the 2023 pre-season programme.

After playing in the rain and thunder at Bonnyrigg a fortnight ago and the extremely hot conditions at Parramatta FC a week ago, Newcastle Jets prepare for their second last trial game before the start of the 2023 season. Most players have returned from holidays and after energy sapping training sessions throughout the week at LMRFF and the Newcastle University, are ready for their clash with Western Sydney Wanderers.

As with most pre-season fixtures, these games offer players the opportunity to put valuable game time minutes under their belt ahead of the start of the Youth League One competition on February 19th, 2023.

Newcastle Jets Academy prove too strong for Parramatta FC

09-2-3

The Newcastle Jets Academy proved too strong for Parramatta FC winning 6 games from a total of 7 played at Melita Stadium on Saturday.

The very hot conditions affected the quality of play as well as the players from both teams. Regardless of the results and score lines, valuable game time minutes were gained by the players of both teams which is so necessary to improve match speed and fitness at this early stage of the pre-season. The Newcastle Jets face Western Sydney Wanderers next on Saturday at Wanderers Football Park.

George Tsamouras vs Parramatta FC

George Tsamouras on the attack against Parramatta FC at LMRFF

U18s Newcastle Jets take on Parramatta FC in the second pre-season match after Christmas in preparation for the 2023 season.

After defeating Bonnyrigg 4-1 last week but with many Youth team members in the line-up, the U18s will attempt to put playing minutes under their belt against an opponent which they dominated last season in every age group.

U18s defeated Parramatta 4-2 and 3-1, U16s won 2-0 and 4-1, U15s won by 8-0 in both games, U14s were held to a 1-1 draw at home and won 3-1 away while the u13s won 8-0 and 6-0! Convincing scores but the most important aspect in the games on Saturday is getting game minutes under the belts of most players on preparation for the start of the 2023 season on 19th February!

10 players from NSW selected to the Australian U17s Joeys

FnSEjOEaAAARF83

The Australian U17s “Joeys” commence their preparations for June’s AFC U-17 Asian Cup Thailand 2023 when they compete in the four nations U-17 Antalya Youth Cup in Turkey next month.

The Australians will face U-17 national men’s teams representing Czechia, Morocco, and Uzbekistan from 8 – 18 February 2023, with Subway Joeys’ Head Coach Brad Maloney selecting a 23-player squad for this tournament.

Speaking about the tournament, Brad Maloney said: “The Antalya Youth Cup presents an exciting opportunity to pit some of the country’s best emerging footballers against leading opposition from three different continents.

“To be able to play the likes of Czechia, Morocco, and Uzbekistan within the space of six days presents an ideal learning experience for this squad as we prepare for June’s AFC U-17 Asian Cup and hopefully the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Peru later this year,” said Maloney.

This will be the first time the Subway Joeys have come together for a camp or tournament since topping their respective Group during the AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2023™ Qualifiers held in Shepparton, Victoria, during October 2022.

Maloney – appointed to the Head Coach role in August of last year – and his coaching staff have spent the past three months watching matches from both home and abroad to support their planning for 2023 and beyond, with seven new faces being selected in the squad for the Antalya Youth Cup.

“With our elite youth pathways in hiatus for almost three years due to the pandemic, it’s more important than ever we are continually monitoring, scouting, and unearthing talent to ensure every eligible player is on our radar and considered for national team honours,” explained Maloney.

“We have made several changes to the squad who contested the qualifiers in October, with the view to providing international exposure to as many players as possible and to build depth as part of our preparations for this year’s Asian Cup,” concluded Maloney.

Due to this tournament being played outside a FIFA window, Adelaide United FC’s Nestory Irankunda was unavailable for selection.

The Asian Football Confederation confirmed earlier this month that Thailand will host the AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2023™, with the tournament to now take place, 15 June – 2 July 2023. The Draw for the AFC U-17 Asian Cup Thailand 2023™ is scheduled to occur in March, where Australia will the need to reach the semi-finals to qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Peru 2023™, to run 10 November – 2 December 2023.
