Hamilton Olympic have climbed to the top of the NPL ladder following an emphatic win at Edgeworth by 3-2 on Friday night.

On a cool night and a perfect playing pitch at Jack McLaughlan Oval, both teams attacked and cancelled each other out in the opening minutes of the game.

No sooner had the game got on the way,  Leo Bertos sent a low cross from the right, both Edgeworth central defenders moved to shut down Kane Goodchild and forgot about Daniel Bird who had enough time to control, pick his spot and bury the ball into the back of the net 1-0.

The game continued to be free flowing and even with both teams attacking each other but with Olympic’s Rhys Cooper very mobile and dangerous and Kane Goodchild being shut down by two defenders every time he received the ball.

During an Olympic attack, Edgeworth broke quickly and passed to Moriyasu who advanced the ball and despite being shadowed by a defender, unleashed a powerful shot which screamed past Danny Ireland and ended in the Olympic net 1-1!

Both teams continued to attack but a number of strong tackles causes the referee to hand-out a plethora of yellow cards.

5 minutes from half time Danny Ireland clears with a kick that sends the ball to Kane Goodchild who despite being surrounded by four defenders and a goalkeeper, unleashes a thunderous shot to put Olympic back in the lead 2-1.

Half time finds Olympic 2-1 in the lead and neutral fans enjoying a football spectacle by two great teams.

The second half begins with Edgeworth increasing the intensity even further and coming close to an equaliser through two efforts in the first five minutes. Danny Ireland saved Olympic during the first effort while the referee ruled the second to be a goal from an offside position.

Edgeworth are in control in the first 10 minutes and dictate play, desperately trying to get the equaliser. During a sustained period of pressure in which Olympic are chasing shadows, the ball is sent to Bren Hammel on the right who despite being flanked on either side by two Olympic defenders, manages to chip a shot into the net from a very narrow angle 2-2!

After this, instead of Edgeworth continuing with the same momentum, Olympic begin to compose themselves, hold on to the ball and begin to create goal scoring opportunities. During one such move Kane Goodchild attacks from the left and despite being surrounded by three Edgeworth defenders, manages to pass to an unmarked Tommy Spencer inside the box who has no problem making 3-2!

Olympic control the match and are in the hunt for a fourth goal which would put the match beyond Edgeworth while the home team are desperate for an equaliser.

In the last 5 minutes the roles are reversed with Olympic being under the hammer as the home side desperately tries to salvage the game. After two brilliant saves by Danny Ireland during this period, Olympic hold the 3-2 score and secure a great win against a formidable opponent.

Olympic now look forward to welcoming arch rival Broadmeadow Magic to Darling St Oval on Sunday 15th May, 2016 at 2.30 pm.

NNSW NPL: Hamilton Olympic down Edgeworth 3-2 to take outright lead

13082773_470089463190296_5856392386697455386_n

HAMILTON Olympic crashed Old Boys’ night at Edgeworth with a 3-2 win on Friday to take the outright Northern NSW National Premier League lead after five rounds.

Olympic led 2-1 at the break at Jack McLaughlan Oval but Bren Hammel scored off a ball from Ayden Brice to put the defending premiers on level terms early in the second half. Olympic, though, were back in front 10 minutes later through a Tommy Spencer goal. Goalkeeper Danny Ireland was then the hero for Hamilton, making two late saves.

In the first half, Daniel Bird finished a well-constructed move inside five minutes and Kane Goodchild pounced on a turnover at the back late in the half for Hamilton. Edgeworth’s Japanese recruit, Keigo Moriyasu, equalised midway through the half with a powerful strike.

The grand final rematch win lifted Olympic to 13 points. Edgeworth are second on 10 ahead of the rest of the round.

Meanwhile, Maitland could be without former Central Coast Mariners midfielder Matt Crowell against Rosebud at Adamstown Oval on Sunday and beyond because of a potential hernia.

Maitland coach Steve Piggott said Crowell had battled the problem since their last trial, against Edgeworth, and he was unsure if the Welshman would need surgery.

“He probably won’t play this week, but we’ll see,” Piggott said on Friday. “It’s a possible hernia, but he can still play. It all depends how comfortable he is and how much damage he could do.

“We trained last Sunday when we were washed out and he was OK, but then he was sore afterwards. He’s had consultation with a GP and a physio and he’s going to get another consultation today.”

The Newcastle Herald was told Maitland have flagged the potential addition of Ryan Clarke on an injury waiver for Crowell. Clarke had an eight-month Northern NSW Football ban quashed on appeal to Football Federation Australia last month but a four-game suspension for playing as an ineligible player in H-grade remains. NNSWF football operations manager Alan Nisbet said Clarke would have to serve the four-match ban once registered.

As for Sunday, Adamstown have midfielder Dayne Pawlik back from suspension but Dan Clements and Daniel Yaxley sidelined with injury.

In the other game on Sunday, Valentine coach Darren Sills hoped to have Alex Tserapas back from injury for the clash away to Weston.

On Saturday, Lambton Jaffas will be without defender Michael Sessions against Charlestown at Edden Oval. Sessions was given a three-week suspension after a send off in the 2-0 win over Valentine last round. Also Saturday, unbeaten Broadmeadow host the Newcastle Jets Youth at Magic Park.

PS4 NPL NNSW Round 5: Bertos & McBreen pumped for the Edgeworth – Olympic NPL leader’s clash.

MARQUEE men Leo Bertos and Daniel McBreen want to give their team more, starting with the top of the table NPL clash between Hamilton and Edgeworth at Jack McLaughlan Oval on Friday night.

McBreen returns for Edgeworth in the 7.15pm game after missing their past two, while Bertos will again feature for leaders Olympic.

Bertos, 34, a 2010 World Cup player for New Zealand, rated his debut NPL campaign so far as “steady”.

“It’s taken a bit to adjust and get back out there,” he said. “I still haven’t hit my straps and I don’t feel like my match fitness is 100 per cent. These old legs are taking a bit longer to get sharper, but I’m getting there.”

McBreen, 39, the 2012-13 A-League golden boot, was also looking for more.

“It’s been OK,” McBreen said. “I think I can do more, but that’s football. Sometimes you’re harder on yourself, but I think I can give more to the team.”

Like Bertos, McBreen is coaching in the Emerging Jets program and said the commitments have been a factor. Eagles coach Damian Zane said McBreen would return in place of Dylan Holz. Daniel Minors would come in for the suspended Lachlan Pasquale.

“It’s been difficult to get to training because of the coaching I do myself, but I’ve told Zaney I want to do more work to get myself into what I feel is better fitness,” McBreen said.

“Hopefully we can work on that and I can feel better in myself on the pitch.”

For Hamilton, coach Michael Bolch said Tommy Spencer or Pat Brown would come in for the suspended Simon Mooney.

Meanwhile, Bertos said he was “just enjoying being part of the team. There’s been a few positional and role changes to adjust to as well, but all in all, I’m going OK.

“I’ve enjoyed my time so far. Not just on the field either. I’ve made good friends there and there are people at the club I knew already.”

Bertos and McBreen crossed paths many times in the long careers in the A-League and have also completed C and B Licence coaching courses together recently.

Both were keen to get bragging rights on Friday night.

“The banter hasn’t started yet,” Bertos said. “I’ve been waiting for a message to pop up on my phone. I might have to send one and get it rolling.

“He had a hamstring niggle a couple of weeks ago, but I’m sure he’ll be right. He’s probably been saving himself for this one anyway.”

McBreen said: “We work together at the Jets, so there will be some banter and bragging rights.

“We’ve both been busy this week but I’m sure there’ll be some messages tonight of tomorrow.

“I’m looking forward to giving him a kick,” McBreen laughed.

An Edgeworth junior, McBreen expected an intense contest against Olympic in the Northern NSW National Premier League grand final rematch. Both are unbeaten and on 10 points after four rounds.

“Back when I played at Edgy all those years ago, Hamilton were a big rival because they were doing so well at the time, so it’s a bit of the old derby again,” McBreen said.

“I’m looking forward to it, especially now with Leo there.

“You always want to play in the bigger games, no matter what league you’re in.

“At the moment, we’re both top of the table, so it should be good and I’m sure there might be some spice in it, with both teams fighting for that top spot.”

Bertos was new to the rivalry but said Olympic were up for the contest.

“It’s a big game and all the boys are excited for it,” he said.

“Just to test ourselves against the best, and see how we’re going ourselves, to see if we’re on that level, and then there’s that carrot of going top of the table.

“These are the games you want to play in, where it’s top of the table or there’s a good rivalry, it brings the best out of you.”
