Herald WPL Round 8: Newcastle Olympic are at home against Mid Coast

NEWCASTLE OLYMPIC V MID COAST FC
DARLING STREET OVAL – SUNDAY 3PM

The race for top spot on the Herald Women’s Premier League table continues when Newcastle Olympic host Mid Coast at Darling Street Oval on Sunday.

The home side sit locked with Broadmeadow on 13-points at the top of the table. Both sides still have a game to play, with Olympic’s clash with New Lambton at the weekend postponed due to coronavirus concerns.

“I think having that weekend off was disappointing but also creates that fire in the belly again to get back on the park,” Olympic coach Harmonie Attwill said.
“There’s a few niggles after a couple of the games so I think it probably did them quite good to have a bit of a rest.”

Olympic are expected to be unchanged, with the exception of Imogen Tusek who remains in doubt with a back injury. Attwill is well aware of the threat posed by the visiting Middies, despite their position of fifth on the table.
“Looking at their recent performances, they’ve definitely come out really strong since the restart. It is going to be a very different game,” Attwill said.
Mid Coast will look to return to the winner’s circle when they make the trip south.

Middies recorded its first loss since the return of football last weekend, going down to a strong Broadmeadow side in blustery conditions at Magic Park.
“The girls are confident heading into the weekend. They know that last week was a lot closer than the score reflected and they’re looking forward to the challenge this week,” Mid Coast coach Mick Grass said.

“This week we’ve focussed on trying to maintain possession for longer periods, especially under pressure. Olympic are a high-quality team but I feel if we can maintain pressure across the park, we’ll be able to stay with them.”
Grass is yet to lock down his starting 11 with a number of players under an injury cloud.

“Chelsea Hall has a niggling hamstring strain but I don’t expect it to keep her out. Nicki Learoyd had her wisdom teeth out on Wednesday, so we’ll see how she pulls up as to whether she takes her place in the side,” Grass said.
The Mid Coast coach was quick to identify the need to convert in the final third on Sunday, with chances against the quality Olympic defence likely to be few and far between.

“Our front line will have to fire this weekend. Scoring chances will be at a premium so we’ll have to capitalise on anything that comes our way,” Grass said.

NEW LAMBTON EAGLES V MEREWETHER UNITED
ARTHUR EDDEN OVAL – SUNDAY 3PM

The completion of round seven marked the official halfway mark in this year’s Herald Women’s Premier League. From here on in every game has ramifications on finals calculations, something New Lambton coach Brad Jones is well aware of.

“The focus is that if we can get ourselves on a run, the good thing is that is with the way the competition is so nice and tight, if you can string together a few results, you’ll go rocketing up that table,” Jones said.

New Lambton sit seventh on the table with just one win from six starts. The thought of games against the competition’s top sides is something their coach is looking forward too.
“The reality is [Merewether] have been the yard stick for the last five years in the competition and with the quality of players they’ve got you just know that you’re going to be in for a top game,” Jones said.

“It’s a good thing for our young squad to see where we are at.”
When it comes to goalkeepers it will be a battle of youth versus experience on Sunday. For the Eagles, Ruby Jones has looked strong in a losing side, while Llamas shot stopper Alison Logue remains arguably the best in the competition.
“I think Alison has been the metric for so many years in the competition. I think Ruby has been doing a good job over the past few weeks. It’ll be nice to see a young, up and coming keeper have a crack at the competition’s best,” Jones said.
Merewether also find themselves in a precarious position, perched in fourth position on the table but at risk of losing ground on front-runners Newcastle Olympic, Broadmeadow Magic and Warners Bay.

“We’ve got two games in hand. I’d like to think they’re both going to be wins but you never know. If they’re both wins, we’re top of the table,” Merewether coach Scott Ellis said.

“We’ve just got to go out and play the way we know we can and continue to build on the development we’re doing.”

Sarah Bergin is unavailable for the clash, while Ellis expects the remainder of the squad to be available for selection.

“I think all the teams are developing and I think the team that comes out on top in the end is the one that is going to be able to continue developing,” Ellis said.
Set down for Arthur Edden Oval, Sunday’s clash will be the second time the sides have met this season. The first was a 3-3 draw at No.2 Sportsground in March.
“When we played them the first time, they were the favourites. Now I think it’s the other way around,” Ellis said.

WARNERS BAY V BROADMEADOW MAGIC
JOHN STREET OVAL – SUNDAY 3PM

Expect end-to-end action when Warners Bay host Broadmeadow Magic on Sunday afternoon, with both sides heading into the clash off the back of strong wins at the weekend.

Broadmeadow were scheduled to play Thornton on Wednesday evening but the game was abandoned due to wet weather.

“It is minimal disruption for Sunday. But the cancellation impacts the schedule for the week after until we replay the game,” Magic coach Jake Curley said.
Broadmeadow have added Gemma Harrison and Erin Wilson to its squad in recent weeks, a move designed to add further depth to an already strong line-up.
“Bringing Gem and Erin in has strengthened the squad. We just need to work on a few things at training, so they understand the system,” Curley said.

Warners Bay head into the clash fresh off a thumping win over Adamstown last weekend. The 5-0 drubbing was another step forward for the side, which has notably improved in recent weeks.

“It’s a good confidence booster for us. We felt that that win was coming for a while, so the girls are definitely keen to improve on that again this weekend,” Warners Bay coach Craig Atkins said.

Jen Hoy was instrumental in the win, which also saw Annika Damico bag a double.

“It was great for [Hoy] to get another full game after missing the week previous with illness. [We’re] definitely looking forward to her getting out on to the pitch again and getting through another 90 minutes. Hopefully [she] can get another couple of goals away.”

Defence will again be critical for the hosts. Magic’s star-studded attack has found the back of the net 18-times this season, including eight goals alone to Lucy Jerram.

“We’ve just got to be tight across the park and keep some of Magic’s key players in check,” Atkins said.

THORNTON REDBACKS V ADAMSTOWN ROSEBUD
THORNTON PARK – SUNDAY 3PM

The Redbacks will be looking to push aside a disrupted preparation when they host Adamstown at Thornton Park on Sunday afternoon.

Thornton are yet to record a win this season, with Wednesday evening’s catch-up game against Broadmeadow Magic abandoned due to wet weather.
“We’ll probably have about six changes to what I had planned against Magic,” Thornton coach Alan Primmer said.

Chelsea Gay and Jasmyn Hughes both drew strong praise from Primmer, with the pair likely to hold significant bearing over the result on Sunday.
The last time these two sides met it was played on a synthetic surface at the Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility in early March.

“The surface at Speers Point is a little bit different to what they’ll get at Thornton Park, so we’ll probably look to put a lot more pressure on the ball,” Primmer said.

“There’s just a real buzz around at training. The girls are enjoying training, they’re getting stuff out of it. The girls are still loving football.
“We’ll upset someone along the line.”

Adamstown also head into the match searching for form. At the completion of round three, the Buds sat clear at the top of the Herald Women’s Premier League table but have since suffered four straight defeats.

“The girls have had a short week this week as I gave them a few days to freshen up. For this weekend we will keep working hard to improve our ability to take chances when they come,” Adamstown coach Ryan Campbell said.

Polish in the final third remains a focus for the Buds, who have struggled to break through opposition defences. Since the competition returned from suspension, Adamstown have conceded 21 goals but only found the back of the net on three occasions.

“Kimmy Trappett and Leia Puxty will be key on Sunday with their attacking from wing back positions to create chances for the team,” Campbell said.

NNSW NPL Round 6: Newcastle Olympic are away to Adamstown Rosebud

ADAMSTOWN ROSEBUD V NEWCASTLE OLYMPIC
ADAMSTOWN OVAL – TUESDAY 18 AUGUST 8:15PM

Two cross-town rivals collide when Newcastle Olympic visit Adamstown at a rescheduled fixture time of 8:15pm on Tuesday.
Both teams had to withdraw from their fixtures last round due to COVID-19 precautions but the two outfits will be eager to return to the field in another big game.

The Rosebuds haven’t tasted victory since their opening day win over Charlestown and will be chasing a valuable three points to stay in touch with the top five places.

Olympic have had a solid start to the season but will also be looking to notch their second victory of the year with their first coming in round one against Weston.

Olympic achieved a win over Adamstown last season at Adamstown Oval, while the two teams played out a 2-2 draw in the latter stages of the previous year.
The match will have plenty of feel as a lot of players have played for both clubs to add to the build-up of this Newcastle rivalry.

Meanwhile, Newcastle Olympic have announced former Newcastle Jets striker Joel Griffiths as its head coach, with the A-League winner to take over next season in a major coup for the club.

EDGEWORTH EAGLES V WESTON WORKERS
JACK MCLAUGHLAN OVAL – SUNDAY 2:30PM

It will be the red-hot Edgeworth taking on a determined Weston in this week’s enormous match of the round at Jack McLaughlan Oval on Sunday.
The Edgeworth juggernaut has rolled on so far in 2020 with the defending champions continuing to achieve prodigious heights in the NPL NNSW, winning their five opening games to lead the competition after the initial rounds.

The Eagles were dominant in their 3-0 victory over Lake Macquarie last round, putting the Roosters to the sword in the first half while four Eagles players, Pat Wheeler, Keanu Moore, Tyson Jackson and skipper Josh Evans all featured in the NPL NNSW Team of the Week.

Weston is coming off a devastating 2-1 loss to Charlestown having led during the game to blow another lead at Rockwell Automation Park.

Consistency is what Leo Bertos’ men are chasing having achieved huge victories against last year’s premiers Maitland and the highly-favoured Lambton so far this year.

An opportunity to be the first team to beat Edgeworth in 2020 is on offer for Weston, while Edgeworth is on an eight-game winning spree stretching back to last year’s semi-final series.

This fixture always throws up a classic game between these two historic clubs of the region, while the two met in this year’s pre-season Heritage Cup with the Eagles winning 2-1.

The Eagles will look to continue their impressive unbeaten run and player-coach Josh Rose said the recent success was based off the club’s winning mentality while praising one of his staff.

“The big factor through all the changes that happened early in the season, there was always one constant voice and that was Rod Linsley. He’s been a main factor in why it has been a smooth transition,” Rose said.

“I just try to analyse before the game and try to get it right and sometimes on the pitch you can identify things but you also need those eyes in the stands. And I’m learning more from each game.

“[Weston] have got a lot of young boys who bring a lot of energy and they try to play football. I think we have the team to beat them and we’ve got to try and match that energy and hopefully pinpoint some areas to break them down.”

Weston still sit inside the top five and will have huge motivation to achieve another victory this weekend. Bertos said his youthful team was still finding their feet in the top grade but expected a much-improved Bears outfit when fully fit.

“It’s been really challenging but the boys have been working hard and got a few a good results and some forgettable ones as well. But that’s what happens when you have a lot of young guys and it takes time for them to learn how to be consistent in their own game,” Bertos said.

“[Edgeworth] have started the season off with a bang and been in good form, so it will be a good challenge for us.

“There are not too many games remaining now. Points are starting to really matter in the coming weeks.”

MAITLAND MAGPIES V LAMBTON JAFFAS
COOKS SQUARE PARK – SUNDAY 2:30PM

A colossal clash will take place at Cooks Square Park on Sunday, with heavyweights Maitland and Lambton to go toe-to-toe.

Many have tipped them to finish at the higher end of the table this season, while history paints this affair as a mega battle between the two sides who finished first and second respectively last season.

Maitland have been flawless at their fortress of Cooks Square Park this season, amassing nine goals over the two fixtures so far.

The last start loss to Weston would have hurt the Magpies momentum, while the Jaffas are also looking to rebound from a heartbreaking, final minute loss to Broadmeadow.
Sunday’s match will be a game of fine margins as history suggests. Looking at the last six encounters, both sides have won twice with two draws.

Maitland’s Braedyn Crowley and Lambton’s Matt Thompson will face their former clubs, while Lambton coach James Pascoe said he was wary of Crowley’s capabilities and the whole Magpies team.

“[Crowley] is someone we’ve got to be aware of but so is Nick Cowburn, so is Joel Wood and they’ve got a really good balanced side and so we won’t concentrate too much on Braedyn as it may open up areas for other players to hurt us,” Pascoe said.

“There was a lot of positives [from the Magic game]. A couple of areas to touch up on in defence, and in terms of match fitness and mental sharpness, we’re much better as I think the three games last week really has kicked us on.

“It’s another game against a real contender. The two games against each other last year we couldn’t be split and we’re two very even teams on paper so it should be a great game.”

Maitland will be eager to avoid back-to-back defeats while coach Mick Bolch said he knows the extreme importance of the game in the grand scheme of the season.
“I think neither team can afford to drop any more points if they want to keep pace with the top two,” Bolch said.

“The boys are desperate for three points after ill-discipline cost us last week against Weston. Whilst it was disappointing to not play last weekend, it gave us a chance to re-group and let a few players get over some niggles.

“[Lambton] have quality all over the park but if we can contain their midfield of [Mitch] Oxborrow and [Matt] Thompson, I believe that will go a long way towards securing three points.”

CHARLESTOWN AZZURRI V VALENTINE PHOENIX
LISLE CARR OVAL – SUNDAY 2:30PM

Charlestown and Valentine will line-up against each other at Lisle Carr Oval on Sunday with both teams eager to rise up the ladder.

Azzurri enjoyed a gutsy 2-1 win over Weston last start to earn their first win of the season, holding on with nine men for the final 10 minutes.

The squad was rewarded with four entries into the NPL NNSW Team of the Week with Riley Smith, Matt Tull, Kev Davison and Nathan Archbold all earning a spot.

Valentine is hoping to replicate their upcoming opponent and score their first win of the season this weekend after parting ways with co-coach Darren Sills.
The teams have been two of the lowest-scoring teams so far with Azzurri having only scored one goal more than the Phoenix with four strikes.

Charlestown will be without key attackers Regan Lundy and Jackson Frendo due to suspension for this game so they will be looking to find another avenue of attack.

The Azzurri were dominant against the Phoenix in the previous encounters including a 4-1 triumph at Lisle Carr Oval in the back end of last season.

BROADMEADOW MAGIC V LAKE MACQUARIE CITY
MAGIC PARK – SUNDAY 2:30PM

The high-flying Broadmeadow Magic will host Lake Macquarie at Magic Park on Sunday.

Magic are coming off a great win over Lambton last round beating the Jaffas with two late goals to seal a tremendous three points.
Broadmeadow sit in second place, five points above third spot and will view this game as an ideal occasion to consolidate their position.

The Roosters were outclassed by Edgeworth 3-0 last round but have moved to four points and put forward some quality performances beforehand.

Lakes are second last after five games and will look to cause an upset against the side with the best attack in the competition so far with 14 goals.

Magic attacker Sam Walker will play against his former club for the first time, while Walker has been in great form with three goals from his last two games.

Herald Women’s Premier League: Newcastle Olympic are away to New Lambton in Round 7 of the competition

NEW LAMBTON V NEWCASTLE OLYMPIC
ALDER PARK – SUNDAY 4:40PM

Confidence is high at Alder Park as the Eagles prepare to take on high-flying Newcastle Olympic in a Sunday afternoon twilight fixture.
New Lambton recorded its first win of the campaign against Thornton last week with coach Brad Jones excited to take on the highly-rated Olympic.
“As far as I’m concerned, the pressure’s all on them… [Newcastle Olympic] are the ones that everyone said were going to win the comp,” Jones said.
“I’m looking forward to it… it is a great opportunity for our girls to just stand up and show them what we’ve been working towards.”
The Eagles are expected to be unchanged for the clash, which kicks off at 4:40pm at Alder Park on Sunday afternoon.
“The competition for spots in both grades is sensational… the way the girls are approaching it is fantastic,” Jones said.
“I think our defensive pairing is going to be up for a big job… Jemma [House] has set the world on fire with the number of goals she scored… we can contain her and our back two do a good job.
“I think with our game plan, it should see us in a good frame to capitilise.”
Newcastle Olympic will head into the clash once again atop of the Herald Women’s Premier League table after a 6-2 win over Thornton on Wednesday night.
“Our midfield was strong on Wednesday… Thornton have a crowded defensive structure, so we had to strategically draw their defence out to play in behind,” Olympic coach Harmonie Attwill said.
Imogen Tusek is the only player under an injury cloud ahead of Sunday’s game, which will be a further opportunity for the women from Darling Street to cement their position as the team to beat in 2020.
“It will be another challenging game… we will need to be better defensively against New Lambton if we are to come away with three points,” Attwill said.
Olympic’s only loss of the campaign so far came against Merewether in round-two, with the side scoring 17 goals in the four games since that loss. During that same period, they’ve conceded just four.

THORNTON V MEREWETHER UNITED
THORNTON PARK – SUNDAY 3PM

Expect the unexpected this weekend when Merewether head to Thornton Park to take on the Redbacks.
On paper it would seem a tough task for the home side, who were beaten 6-2 by Newcastle Olympic in a mid-week catch up game on Wednesday.
Despite their successes over the last few years, the trip to Thornton Park has never been an easy one for the Llamas, who head into the clash within reach of top spot on the table.
“This is an important one for us… we’re very much a work in progress. The game against Warners Bay, I said to our team that the way that we played was actually a major step forward for us in our evolution,” Merewether coach Scott Ellis said.
“I was really happy with the changes I’m starting to see… for us, the focus will be trying to embed those some more and tweak some of what I started to see to get it to the end goal.”
On the field Ellis believes his midfield holds the key to success for the Llamas.
“Our midfield this year is completely different to last year… so, our big focus is getting them to understand their roles and their interactions,” Ellis said.
And while the result will be determined on the field, there is a unique storyline that will play out on the sidelines. Merewether coach Ellis and Thornton mentor Alan Primmer have more in common than most would expect.
“We coached against each other about 10 years ago… I’ve actually based a lot of my coaching philosophy on what I observed him doing,” Ellis said.
“It could almost be the master and apprentice in some ways.”
________________________________________
WARNERS BAY V ADAMSTOWN ROSEBUD
JOHN STREET OVAL – SUNDAY 3PM

Warners Bay will look to bounce back after a disappointing loss to Merewether last weekend. The Panthers sit fourth on the Herald Women’s Premier League table but, pending other results, a loss could see them slip out of the top four.
“We definitely need the three points. So we need to be starting hard and finishing hard after that 90-minutes,” Warners Bay coach Craig Atkins said.
Jen Hoy returns for the clash with Adamstown having missed last weekend’s match due to illness. Her inclusion will add significant strike power to a side who struggled to convert opportunities last weekend.
“Everyone should be on deck for the weekend. Jen has recovered, she trained well last night, so we’re hoping to have her back on deck,” Atkins said.
“The final third is crucial. We obviously worked a lot on that on Tuesday night and we’ll work on that on Thursday night on the training ground.
“We just need to score goals and be more aggressive in and around the opposition’s 18-yard box.”
It is a busy weekend for Adamstown, who play Broadmeadow Magic in a round five catch-up game on Thursday evening, before they meet the Panthers on Sunday afternoon.
“The girls are feeling okay… a bit disappointed with the previous results but hoping to get a good result on Thursday,” Adamstown coach Ryan Campbell said.
“We have just focused on our finishing as well as how we attack and defend on set pieces as that has been a weak spot for us.”
Rosebud are expected to be unchanged for both games, excluding Olivia Sneddon, who remains sidelined due to injury.
When asked who holds the key to success across the weekend, Campbell said his forward line would be crucial in ensuring the side comes away with points.
“I think our attacking players are key in stepping up and taking some chances so we can get a lead and then be able to play with a bit more confidence,” Campbell said.
________________________________________
BROADMEADOW MAGIC V MID COAST
MAGIC PARK – SUNDAY 3PM

Broadmeadow’s rapid fire run of mid-week catch-up games continues on Thursday when they play the Rosebuds at Adamstown Oval. It is a short turnaround for the women in red, who this weekend face a Mid Coast side strong on form.
Broadmeadow sit fifth on the table but are within striking distance of fourth-placed Warners Bay and still have two games in hand over the Panthers.
Mid Coast head into the clash hoping to make it four from four in first grade, having not yet dropped a point since the competition returned from its COVID-19 suspension.
“Everyone’s pretty happy. It’s always good when you’re winning,” Mid Coast coach Mick Grass said.
Last weekend’s win over Adamstown was the latest in a string of strong performances that saw the young Mid Coast side play with a high level of composure and skill. That is something Grass wants to further develop.
“Just sharpening up on the ball… I think under pressure on Sunday we turned the ball over too much,” Grass said.
“We got away with the result but I’d like to see us hold on to the ball a bit longer.”
With opponents Magic not lacking strike power in attack, it is the backline Grass believes will decide whether his side continues its strong run of form.
“I think this weekend our backline is going to have to stand up… I think they’re going to come up against a bigger test this weekend,” Grass said.
“I think they’ll do a job for us… I’ll expect them to stand up to keep us in the game at times.”

NNSW NPL: Newcastle Olympic take on Maitland Magpies in Round 5 for the competition

NEWCASTLE OLYMPIC V MAITLAND MAGPIES
DARLING STREET OVAL – SATURDAY 2:30PM

Maitland will look to pick up their first away win of the season when they travel to Darling Street Oval to play Newcastle Olympic on Saturday.
The Magpies have been in sensational form at Cooks Square Park but have faltered in their two opening games on the road, going down to Edgeworth in round one and most recently to Weston on Wednesday night.
Weston took home the bragging rights in the Coalfields derby with a 1-0 win while Maitland was forced to play most of the fixture with 10 men.
On the other hand, Newcastle have shown impeccable fighting spirit highlighted by their come-from-behind 2-2 draw with Lambton last weekend. But their unbeaten start to the campaign came to an end to arch-rivals, Broadmeadow, on Wednesday night.
Tim Stewart’s goal of the season contender put them into an early lead against Magic but Olympic conceded three second-half goals to lose 3-1 at home to leave them with their first taste of defeat.
The two sides will be looking to return to the winner’s circle this weekend and maintain their spots in the top half of the table.
Looking at the last six encounters, each side has won twice while the other two matches were draws, although Olympic beat last year’s premiers 4-0 at Darling Street last season.
History shows these two teams provide close games while Newcastle interim-coach Alex Tagaroulias said he knows his side are in for another tough test.
“It’s a relief to come back but when you take a look at it, [the games] could have been a couple of wins that we could have had as well when we review it,” Tagaroulias said.
“We’re having to deal with a few injuries and suspensions but we are playing the teams that are around us and ahead of us so it is an opportunity to do something.
“The obvious [threat] is [Braedyn] Crowley and [Joel] Wood. We have to be mindful and have to block supply to them also.”

VALENTINE PHOENIX V ADAMSTOWN ROSEBUD
CB COMPLEX – SUNDAY 2:30PM

Plenty will be on the line when Adamstown travel to play a desperate Valentine side at Croudace Bay Complex on Sunday.
Both line-ups will believe they can achieve a valuable three points against an evenly-matched opposition.
Valentine are coming off a devastating 5-1 defeat to reigning premiers Maitland due to a second-half collapse to leave them bottom of the table.
The Rosebuds achieved a draw against Weston last round and now sit on four points from their opening games, leaving last year’s wooden spoon recipients pleased by their start to the year.
The two clubs also played rescheduled fixtures on Wednesday night with Valentine suffering another heavy 4-0 defeat at the hands of Lambton while the Rosebuds went down 2-1 to Lake Macquarie.
Adamstown has won four of the last six encounters against Valentine, while the two teams are used to battling away against one another finishing only a point apart last season.
Valentine will have fire in the belly to bounce back this weekend and achieve that maiden win. Co-coach Sam Griffin said his players needed to operate smarter in defence.
“We need to recognise moments in the game to attack and defend and pick our moments. I think we’re trying to get ourselves back in games too quick and leaving ourselves a bit exposed,” Griffin said.
“[Adamstown] is a massive game. I’ll back us in and we’ve got the people to do it while we know we have to earn every point, every goal.
“We need to start winning games and we understand the desperation that we need to show [to win].”
Adamstown are showing promising signs so far in 2020 with coach Shane Cansdell-Sherriff saying he expected more from the Rosebuds.
“We’ve got four points but performance-wise we haven’t been at our best. And we know where we need to be better,” Cansdell-Sherriff said.
“[With the three games] it’s all about looking after the body and advising them to look after themselves in between but we’ll rotate where we can and it helps to have five subs as we can make use of more players.
“[This weekend] will be a great opportunity to put things right and get some more points on the board.”

LAMBTON JAFFAS V BROADMEADOW MAGIC
ARTHUR EDDEN OVAL – SATURDAY 2:30PM

A colossal encounter between two giant Newcastle clubs will begin round five with Lambton playing home to Broadmeadow at Arthur Edden Oval.
Broadmeadow narrowly went down 1-0 to Edgeworth last weekend with a late Eagles goal a shattering blow to the Magic side who defended resolutely for 85 minutes.
But Magic bounced back tremendously on Wednesday night as the 2018 champions took on their traditional rivals, Newcastle Olympic, in a highly-entertaining local derby with Magic coming away with an impressive 3-1 win having come back from a goal down.
Meanwhile, Lambton re-discovered their goal scoring touch with a 4-0 victory over Valentine on Wednesday after playing out a draw against Newcastle Olympic last weekend.
Broadmeadow and Lambton sit second and third on the table respectively to provide an early season top-of-the-table clash having also qualified for the finals consecutively for the last three seasons.
Reigning Graham Jennings Medal recipient and Lambton midfielder Mitch Oxborrow will be facing his former side for the first time along with team-mate Kale Bradbery, to add to the already competitive rivalry.
Apart from the narrow defeat against Edgeworth, Magic is on a great run of form and coach Anthony Richards said it would be another intriguing contest for his young team against Lambton.
“We got a lot of positives out of the Edgeworth game. Our attitude and behaviour was fantastic. We worked out that out of last year’s game where they pumped us 6-1 at home we had 10 players that weren’t involved. So that’s a big turnaround,” Richards said.
“[Lambton] do have a star-studded side and bench and it’s going to be another tough game especially at the chocolate box [Arthur Edden Oval].
“We saw how our young players went on the weekend. Our young goalkeeper, who has just turned 20, Lachlan Watson, had the game of his life and David Ifield is probably our form player so it is another terrific test for our young players. They’re doing well.”

LAKE MACQUARIE CITY V EDGEWORTH EAGLES
MACQUARIE FIELD – SUNDAY 1:45PM

Lake Macquarie will host competitions leaders Edgeworth at Macquarie Field on Sunday.
Coming off two losses to start the year, the Roosters have kick-started their campaign with a couple of quality performances earning a draw against Charlestown Azzurri on the weekend before winning their first game of the season on Wednesday night.
Two fantastic Chris Berlin goals saw Lakes beat Adamstown 2-1 at Macquarie Field with the veteran striker notching three goals in the last two games for his new club.
Edgeworth have bolted out of the gates to lead the pack after four games winning all of them including a crucial 1-0 victory over Broadmeadow last weekend.
New interim player-coach Josh Rose got off to the perfect start but will now be without super-sub Daniel Fabrizio who moved to join Brisbane City in the NPL QLD.
The Eagles will look to their strength in numbers and aim to maintain their firm grip on first place with another three points on Sunday.

WESTON WORKERS V CHARLESTOWN AZZURRI
ROCKWELL AUTOMATION PARK – SUNDAY 2:30PM

Weston and Charlestown will battle it out at Rockwell Automation Park on Sunday with the two sides boasting plenty of young, exciting attackers to set up another exciting fixture.
Weston will look to put back-to-back wins together for the first time this season after coming off a monumental 1-0 victory over Maitland in the ‘El-Clasicoal’ on Wednesday night.
The win lifted the Bears into the top five with Lucas Straker notching the all-important goal on his first-grade debut.
Azzurri is still chasing its first win of the new season with only a point to show from their opening four games, with the first point coming against Lake Macquarie last weekend.
Six points separate these two teams and Charlestown will want to bridge the gap given the significance of every game within the shortened season.
In the previous games between these two teams, both sides settled for a 2-2 draw last time at the home of the Bears while Weston won earlier on last season.
Weston’s Aaron Niyonkuru and Charlestown’s Riley Smith will be two key players in attack for their respective teams and will be ones to watch.

NNSW NPL ROUND3: Newcastle Olympic defeated 3-1 by Broadmeadow Magic

James Virgili and Sam Walker starred as Broadmeadow overcame a spectacular strike from rookie Tim Stewart to beat Newcastle Olympic 3-1 in their Northern NSW NPL catch-up game on Wednesday night.

Walker scored twice and Virgili converted from the penalty spot, after earlier setting up a goal, in the second half at Darling Street Oval in the round three fixture.

Magic looked the better side early, threatening in the third minute with a shot across the face of goal from Virgili. Cody Carroll’s 26th-minute header was knocked onto the woodwork by Olympic keeper Nate Cavaliere.

However, it was Olympic who struck first with an amazing 30-metre strike from Stewart. It was the teenage midfielder’s first NPL goal in just his fourth top-grade game.

Olympic striker Dino Fajkovic went close twice to doubling the lead early in the second half but Walker was next to score in the 54th minute. Virgili found space and delivered a cross which was spilled by Cavaliere, who then blocked a follow-up shot from Carroll only for Walker to knock home the rebound.

Rooke was brought down on the edge of the area in the 64th minute and Virgili slotted in the penalty.

Walker delivered the finishing touch for Broadmeadow in the 76th minute when Olympic failed to clear a rebound from another Carroll free kick. Olympic, who were already without Kyle Hodges, Blake Green and Tom Curran, lost striker Kent Harrison to injury moments earlier. Magic had Alex Kantarovski leave the field with a groin strain in the 13th minute.

The win took Magic to nine points and eased the pain of a 1-0 loss to Edgeworth on Sunday. Coach Anthony Richards was most pleased his side’s sound defence, which was breached only by Stewart’s wonder goal.

“I think that’s only the time our coaching staff have clapped a goal from the opposition, it was amazing,” Richards said.

He said Carroll, Rooke and Jeremy Wilson, who came on for Kantarovski, were among his side’s best.

“That was Jeremy’s first game back from illness and he was terrific,” he said. “Cody has been a bit quiet but he was back to his best tonight and Mitch was good again I thought.”

Also last night, Lambton Jaffas defeated Valentine 4-0 at Edden Oval, Lake Macquarie scored their first win of the year, downing Adamstown 2-1 at Macquarie Field, and the Bears beat a 10-man Maitland 1-0 at Weston Park.

Maitland lost James Thompson to a straight red card for referee abuse in the 37th minute.

Weston scored through Lukas Straker in the 69th minute off a cross from Chris Hurley.

Kale Bradbery scored in the fifth minute and in first-half injury time to set up the Jaffas’ victory over last-placed Valentine.

Kaleb Cox (68th) made it 3-0 and Scott Pettit scored from the spot in the 73rd after a handball from Phoenix.

Chris Berlin was the hero for Lake Macquarie against his former club, scoring in the sixth minute with a header and in the 33rd with a quality long-range strike.

Tallan Martin pulled one back for Adamstown in the 70th minute and Lakes lost Michael Bru to a second yellow card in the 83rd but the Roosters hung on to win.

Round five on the weekend features Jaffas against Magic at Edden Oval and Olympic versus Maitland at Darling Street Oval on Saturday. On Sunday, Lake Macquarie host Edgeworth, Valentine welcome Adamstown and Charlestown travel to Weston.
