AustraliaThe U19s team of ASA Karditsa suffered a 6-2 away defeat against Levadiakos on Matchday 1 of the Super League 2 Youth championship.

The team lined up with absences from it’s roster and gave participation time to players of a much lower age range.

In the 5th minute ASA opened the scoring with a well-taken penalty kick by Tigka, with the hosts turning the game around in the next few minutes. Tsamouras with a direct free kick and while the ball deflected from a defender of the host team, sent the ball into the net for the 2-2, which was maintained until the 70th minute.

From that point on, Levadiakos found its way to the net four more times, scoring the three points of victory.

U19s Super League 2, take 5, after Greek FA intervention!

After four postponements so far, the Super League 2 U19s competition will start on the weekend of 18/19 February after an intervention by the Greek FA.

The first plan by the organising committee was rejected by the Greek FA and a new one drafted which respects the age limits that must exist in such circumstances.

The original plan enabled the participation of professional players to 24 years of age! The Greek FA pointed out that these competitions are mandated by UEFA for a club to meet it’s licensing obligations and are purely for developmental purposes only.

In the new upgraded plan:

– Only players born on or after January 1, 2005 are eligible to participate.

– Up to five professionals are allowed under this age limit (no Super League 2 team has five contracts with players from 2005!)

– None born in 2004 (as opposed to U19 Super League 1, where up to 3 are allowed)

– Up to two foreigners can be included in the line-up of each team. It concerns players, who are not eligible to participate in the Greek national team. Clubs can register up to four, but only two of them are eligible to compete at the same time.

The twenty Super League 2 clubs will be divided into 4 groups of five. Each team will play 8 matches (home-away) and in the end the group winners will face each other in a Final-4.

Under the new plan, teams will participate in just 8 official matches and only the two finalists will reach 10.

The Groups

Group A: Apollon Pontou, Makedonikos, Kampaniakos, Iraklis, Kozani

Group B: Aeolikos, ASA Karditsa, AEL, Niki Volos, Levadiakos

Group C: Panachaiki, Kalamata, Tilikratis, Ilioupoli, Diagoras

Group D: Chania, Youchtas Ionikos, Egaleo, Kallithea

George Tsamouras back in Australia for Christmas

George back in Australia

George Tsamouras at Athens international airport

U19s ASA Karditsa player George Tsamouras returned to Australia to spend Christmas after rolling his ankle during training. Taking advantage of the two weeks rest advised by the team doctor coupled with one week which the team normally has off for Christmas, the Newcastle youngster was able to return after five months in Greece.

George caught up with extended family and friends in Newcastle, chatted with ex-coaches and spent time fishing and enjoying the sun. The three weeks in Newcastle have been fun, but immediately after the new year he will be jetting out again for the final three months of the 2023-2024 Greek Super League 2 season!

George has cemented his place in the u19s ASA Karditsa squad and in the past month has also been invited to train with the First Grade team who are full-time professionals. The dream of the young Australian will be to secure a professional contract either with his current club or any other which might be interested in securing his services.

U19s ASA Karditsa narrowly defeated, 3-2 by the National Armed Services in pre-season friendly

K19 ASA KARDITSA

U19s ASA Karditsa and the National Armed Services team played a match at suburban Niki Kaminades field in a pre-season match, with proceeds going towards the flood victims of Karditsa. The match was organized by the club and the Municipality of Karditsa to help the homeless and needy.

The efforts of both teams were undermined by the terrible condition of the surface of the pitch they were playing on. The youngsters of ASA Karditsa were the first to draw blood with a nice cross and well taken shot from the right wing. The National Armed Services team which boasted players from Super League 1 and Super League 2 completing their military service, equalized in the second half and took the lead 2-1, with a penalty.

The ASA Karditsa youngsters soldiered on and were able to draw the match 2-2 from a well taken free kick! Despite this, the armed services team were able to score one more goal in the final minutes of the game that gave them a 3-2 victory.

16 Year Old Greek-Australian George Tsamouras signs for Greek Super League 2 side A.S.A. Karditsa FC

ASA KARDITSA top pic

Australia

Ex Newcastle Olympic and Newcastle Jets Academy player George Tsamouras has accepted an offer to play with the U19s side of Greek Super League 2 club A.S.A. Karditsa for the 2023-24 season! The 16 year old Hunter Sports High School student who just finished guiding the U20s Newcastle Jets win the FNSW League Two Men’s Premiership, flew into Greece in August and after trials at Asteras Tripolis and Panathinaikos, has accepted an offer to play for the U19s squad of A.S.A. Karditsa FC!

George began his football at the age of 6 with Newcastle Olympic FC. After spending three years in the elite Skill Acquisition Program (SAP) between 10 and 12, he returned to Olympic and helped them win the U14s and U15s NNSW NPL Premierships! On a personal note, he also gained selection in the u15s NNSW State Team, was voted Newcastle Olympic U15s Player’s Player of the Year for 2021 as well as offered a position in the Newcastle Jets Academy for 2022. In his two seasons at the Newcastle Jets Academy he helped the U16s Newcastle Jets win the Premiership and Grand Final in 2022 and the U20s Newcastle Jets win the Premiership in 2023!

After securing a European passport and receiving invitations by two Greek Super League 1 clubs George left Australia for the first time in the hope of finding a new home to apply his trade! Unable to secure a spot at these two Super League 1 clubs, more because of his young age than talent, George moved to Karditsa, the town from which two of his grandparents originated. After a three week trial, interrupted by one week of torrential rain and flooding, George was offered a position in the U19s squad for the 2023-24 season.

A.S.A. Karditsa is a professional club that was established in 1904, is one of the oldest clubs in the country and holds the record for having played more seasons in Greece’s 2nd division, than any other club!

A big thank you to A.S.A’s Club General Manager George Bezas and Technical Director of the ASA Karditsa Academy, Giannis Pondikas.
