After wins against Gladesville Ryde Magic last Sunday, both U20s and Youth Newcastle Jets have a bye this weekend and will not be playing.

The next match is at home on 9th July against Western Rage.

After three consecutive away games the U20s Newcastle Jets return to the LMRFF on Sunday night to contest Round 21 of the competition against Gladesville Ryde Magic. Having drawn in two of their past three matches and forfeited the other, the Newcastle team will be keen to record their 15th win of the season which will ensure they maintain their 7 point lead at the top of the table.

Jets Youth will also need to record a win as well if they are to keep second spot and edge closer to UNSW FC who are 4 points clear. Gladesville will not be easy as they are only 2 points behind the Jets and they will put up a fight for the three points.

Α player to look out for in the Gladesville team is their 50 year old goalkeeper Kiriakos Tohouroglou who has played 238 matches in the Greek 1^st division! Sydney born, Kiriakos played for Olympiakos for six seasons, winning 3 titles and 2 cups and eight seasons with PAOK Salonika, with whom he won 1 Greek Cup!

U20s and Youth Jets extracted 2-2 and 3-3 draws respectively on Saturday night in Sydney in the battle between first versus second against UNSW FC. Both Newcastle teams led 2-0 but the locals finished strongly to salvage draws.

U20s began the game well controlling the match and dictating play. They scored in the 14^th minute and looked comfortable on the ball. Despite playing only their second game in four weeks they kept UNSW at bay and despite going into half time with only a 1-0 lead, they looked well in control of proceedings.

The domination in possession continued in the second half for the Jets and was rewarded with a second goal at the 60^th minute. UNSW FC reacted almost immediately, brining the game back to 2-1 two minutes later. The intensity of the game then increased with both teams looking for a goal that would either put the match beyond reach or bring it on level terms. In the 71^st minute a sustained attack by UNSW resulted in Newcastle’s defence being unable to clear quickly and 2-2 was on the scoreboard.

The rest of the match was even with both teams looking for the winner which never came. Given this was the second match of the U20s in four weeks, a good performance against a competitive and spirited opponent.

U20s Newcastle Jets and Youth take on UNSW FC in the clash between first versus second with exactly 1/3 of the season remaining! Having only played once in the past three weeks, due to two forfeited games, U20s will be called upon to defend their 9 point lead against second placed UNSW FC.

After setting the competition on fire and gaining a twelve point lead from their nearest rival, U20s Newcastle Jets have struggled to field a competitive squad in recent weeks due to injuries, player absences and player departures! UNSW FC on the other hand have lost a mere four games all season, have caught up to Newcastle on goal average and look to continue their winning run against the depleted Jets on Saturday. A win will bring them to withing 6 points of the lead while a loss will give the Newcastle team a 12 point lead again.

Newcastle Jets Youth are still licking their wounds from two consecutive losses against mid-table teams but fortunately for them, a loss by league leaders UNSW FC has them only 4 points behind. A third consecutive loss this week against a strong UNSW FC side will place them 7 points behind the lead and also enable the latter to overtake the Jets in 1^st place of the Club Championship which leads to promotion at the end of the season!

U20s league leaders by 12 points, Newcastle Jets, forfeited their match against Camden Tigers on Saturday due to their inability to field enough players! A number of injuries, the departure of players from the Academy and the inability to use players from the Boy’s Youth league because they were playing on the same day at a different location in Sydney, resulted in this bizarre decision!

Next Saturday First Grade and U20s Newcastle Jets are away to UNSW at 7:00pm and 5:00pm respectively.

Newcastle Jets Boy’s Youth teams are away to Sutherland but the latest kick off for u18s is 2:10pm, enabling players who may be called upon to “play up”, to get to NSW University!

Australian football pioneer Rale Rasic, the first coach to take the Socceroos to a World Cup, has died, aged 87.

Rasic, a Sport Australia Hall of Fame member, is renowned as among the nation’s most influential football identities.

The Bosnian-born Rasic, who played in Yugoslavia’s first division, came to Australia in 1962. Just eight years later, he was appointed as Australia’s coach when aged 34.

In 1974, Rasic led Australia to the World Cup where the Socceroos were beaten by East Germany 2-0, lost to eventual champions West Germany 3-0 and then drew 0-0 with Chile.

Rasic was dumped as coach after the cup, saying the nation’s football hierarchy believed he wasn’t a “real Aussie.”

“They took from me something that I was doing better than anyone else,” he said. “I was a true-blue Aussie and nobody can deny that. I taught the players how to sing the national anthem.”

He remained in contact with the 1974 squad for the rest of his life.

“They are part of my family … I certainly helped them realise their dreams but they also made me who I am with their devotion, commitment and loyalty,” he said.

Asked what the Socceroos, past and present, meant to him, he told SBS two years ago: “Very easy question and I have a simple answer: the Socceroos and the green and gold jersey are my life.”

Rasic’s coaching career included stints at Melbourne Hungaria, St George, Marconi Stallions, Pan Hellenic, Adelaide City, Blacktown City, South Melbourne, APIA Leichhardt, Canterbury-Marrickville, Rockdale Ilinden, Fairfield Bulls and Canberra Cosmos.

In 2004, Rasic was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his service to soccer as a player, coach and administrator.

U20s Newcastle Jets conceded their first draw of the season to Bankstown United in Round 18 of the Competition but because of a defeat by second placed Prospect United FC, were able to extend their lead to 12 points on the FNSW League Two Men’s competition! The match was one in which Newcastle dominated the first half and Bankstown the second.

In the first half Newcastle dominated play and it looked like another comfortable routine win was on the cards. Strong at the back, creative in midfield but poor in attack resulted in both teams going scoreless into the half time break.

In the second half Bankstown took control of the midfield and dictated play. Having used three substitutions at half time and another forced substitution through injury early in the second half, the options for a reaction by the Newcastle bench were limited!

The game finished with Bankstown peppering the Newcastle goal and the Jets keeper pulling off some great saves to keep the score at 0-0.  Given that the first game in Newcastle ended 7-1 to the Jets, the old proverb of never underestimating your opponent couldn’t apply to this match any further.
